CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Built as a fortress with thick stone walls, steel doors and even port holes for armed guards in its statues, it was once written that the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland could withstand a two-week long siege. That same building has now stood the test of time and is celebrating its 100-year anniversary.
The building at the corner of Superior Avenue and East 6th Street first opened on Aug. 23, 1923 after taking two years to build. The Cleveland Fed, founded in 1914, had been renting space on Public Square before moving to its current home.
