1 Sargeant St, Geelong West goes to auction on August 26.

Geelong West may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about mid-century modern architecture.

But a little taste of Palm Springs has just landed in the heritage suburb by way of a contemporary new build that pays homage to the popular design style.

The crisp white external colour palette, angled roofline and perforated brick front fence immediately evoke a 1960s vibe at.cfSGoo.cfSGoo{color:var(--ck-textSecondary);margin-top:20px;}/*!sc*/data-styled.g520[id="style__SEODisclaimerText-sc-1j6h7ak-2"]{content:"cfSGoo,"}/*!sc*/.bTWqPM.bTWqPM{list-style:none;display:block;-webkit-column-fill:auto;-webkit-column-fill:auto;column-fill:auto;-webkit-column-count:4;column-count:4;height:100px;display:block;overflow-x:hidden;}/*!sc*/.bTWqPM.bTWqPM li{display:list-item;}/*!sc*/.bTWqPM.bTWqPM a{font-size:0.75rem;line-height:1rem;font-family:"Pangea","Helvetica Neue",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-variation-settings:"XTDR" 50,"APRT" 100,"SPAC" 40;font-weight:400;color:var(--ck-textSecondary);}/*!sc*/@media (max-width:1024px){.bTWqPM.bTWqPM{-webkit-column-count:3;column-count:3;height:150px;}}/*!sc*/@media (max-width:767px){.bTWqPM.bTWqPM{-webkit-column-count:2;column-count:2;height:200px;}}/*!sc*/.fVFFaP.fVFFaP{list-style:none;display:block;-webkit-column-fill:auto;-webkit-column-fill:auto;column-fill:auto;-webkit-column-count:4;column-count:4;height:100px;display:none;overflow-x:hidden;}/*!sc*/.fVFFaP.fVFFaP li{display:list-item;}/*!sc*/.fVFFaP.fVFFaP a{font-size:0.75rem;line-height:1rem;font-family:"Pangea","Helvetica Neue",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-variation-settings:"XTDR" 50,"APRT" 100,"SPAC" 40;font-weight:400;color:var(--ck-textSecondary);}/*!sc*/@media (max-width:1024px){.fVFFaP.fVFFaP{-webkit-column-count:3;column-count:3;height:150px;}}/*!sc*/@media (max-width:767px){.fVFFaP.fVFFaP{-webkit-column-count:2;column-count:2;height:200px;}}/*!sc*/data-styled.g521[id="style__TabContent-sc-1j6h7ak-3"]{content:"bTWqPM,fVFFaP,"}/*!sc*/ 1 Sargeant St.

Raked ceilings and a suspended fireplace feature in the living room.

The Geelong-based vendors’s love of the era is further on display inside the three-bedroom home where he and his team have gone to great lengths to capture the modernist aesthetic.

Think teak cabinetry, a custom brick bedhead with recessed timber pigeon holes, a suspended wood fireplace and, of course, a fabulous indoor-outdoor connection.

The vendor says he has always had a soft spot for mid-century modernism and saw a chance to do something different in a quiet Geelong West court not far from Pakington St.

He worked with architect firm James Deans & Associates to bring the project to life.

Teak cabinetry channels the mid-century vibe in the kitchen.

The purpose-built entertainment room opens onto the back yard.

“Nothing like that has been done in Geelong West previously so I thought I’d break away from the norm and do something unique,” he said.

“Definitely the interior side of it pays homage to the mid-century era. The whole house has raked ceilings, there’s the brick bedhead where we put in pigeon holes out of teak with LED strips in them.

“There’s teak cabinetry throughout and little details like all the timber doors and arcs, that is really representative of that mid-century era.

“There’s a lot of high-quality craftsmanship in doing those doors. They all had to be handmade, all the jams, and they’re paired up with the bronze hardware and door furniture.”

Indoor-outdoor living is at the heart of the design, with the open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area flowing out to a covered patio and lawn area.

The rust-colour bathroom dares to be different.

Entertain in all weather conditions.

An adjoining purpose-built entertainment room also opens onto the north-facing yard and has its own kitchenette, creating a bar-like space for year-round gatherings.

Inside, the main living room features exposed hardwood ceiling beams and engineered oak flooring. Slate floor tiles were chosen to delineate the designer kitchen and better show off the beautiful teak cabinetry.

There’s no wasted space, with the walk-in pantry leading through to the laundry, and a study nook tucked into the hall that leads to the two minor bedrooms.

The elegant central bathroom here features terrazzo style floor tiles, a green wall tiles and brass tapware.

The brick bedhead has teak pigeon holes with LED lighting.

A study nook caters for those who work from home.

For the ensuite off the main bedroom, which sits at the front of the house, a bold rust tone was chosen for a pop of colour and point of difference.

“It’s a super cool little house and the location is fantastic,” the builder said.

“You are 200-300m from Pako, you are in a dead-end court so it’s not a thoroughfare, there’s only nine houses in the street, it’s so quiet.”

Gartland, Geelong agent Michael Marmora will auction 1 Sargeant St, Geelong West on August 26 at 12.30pm. Price hopes are $1.5m to $1.65m.
